Before Truth Items, Keys, and Tools
What to pick up in Chapter 1 and why it is not a shop.
Before Truth is not a simulator with a spinning wheel of gear. Items exist to open the next evidence gate. Johnpcps / Eagle Studios hide tools in drawers and dark corners of the Chapter 1 mansion, then expect you to remember who is holding them in online co-op. This page lists the pickups players actually search for: flashlight, papers, keys, screwdriver, battery, and vent access.
There are no promo redeem codes that spawn these objects. If a site promises “free screwdriver code,” it is wrong—Promo codes.
Flashlight and papers
The flashlight is the first tool. Aim it at wood grain, second drawers, and keypad faces—not at the stalker’s eyes. Light discipline is survival as much as inventory. Pair this with How to survive and Controls.
Papers are items even when they are not in a hotbar. The bathroom second-drawer sheet that lists Kitchen / Living Room / Washroom is the most important “item” in early Chapter 1. Photograph it or read it in chat. Method: Kitchen code.
Computer printouts and letter slips belong in the same mental inventory. Do not throw them away because they look like flavor. Letter codes explains why streamer digits fail.
Keys, including the servant bedroom
Locked doors in the mansion usually want a key you already walked past. The servant’s bedroom key is a frequent search term because the door looks important and the key looks like clutter. Sweep bedrooms, servant spaces, and drawers twice. Call “I have the bedroom key” so four people do not search the same nightstand.
If a door still refuses you, confirm you are on the matching lock, not a later Chapter 2 door. Room context: Mansion map.
Screwdriver and vents
Vents are not shortcuts for panic sprints. They are screwdriver-gated paths. Pick up the screwdriver when you see it; assign one player as the vent operator in co-op. Entering a vent during a chase with no exit plan is a wipe. The mid-article video shows Chapter 1 routing where tools and openings appear in investigation order—pause if your lobby’s spawn of a prop differs slightly, then resume for the type of pickup.
Do not drop the screwdriver to “make space.” This is not a looter. Keep the tool until the vent job is done.
Battery and other one-off props
Some sessions surface a battery or similar power prop for a light or device puzzle. Treat it like the kitchen paper: use it where the environment asks, then move on. Do not farm duplicates. If you cannot find it, you skipped a drawer, not a redeem menu.
Teddy bears, fallen pillows, and jump-scare props are not inventory. Looking at them while the creature is in the doorway is how people break the look-away rule.
Co-op inventory jobs
Online co-op, including later four-player Chapter 2 instances, needs ownership:
- Key carrier announces locks they can open.
- Tool carrier keeps screwdriver / battery.
- Paper reader never sprints off with the only clue.
- Lookout does not need items; they need line-of-sight discipline.
Roles: Co-op tips. Full Chapter 1 order: Chapter 1 walkthrough. How the chain ends: How to beat.
What will never be an item
- Twitter strings and “RELEASE2026” coupons.
- Executor menus that spawn keys. Read Script safety.
- Chapter 3 exclusive loot. Chapter 3 is not released—Chapter 3 status.
- A universal kitchen number stored as a keycard. Digits are randomized per session.
Chapter 2 carry-over mindset
Chapter 2 does not let you import Chapter 1 keys. New building, new pickups, same literacy: flashlight, papers, pads, look-away. Walkthrough: Chapter 2 walkthrough. Difficulty: Puzzle difficulty.
Search order when you are “missing an item”
- Re-open the last room with the flashlight on.
- Check second drawers.
- Ask who on the squad already has the key or screwdriver.
- Re-read the newest paper before backtracking the whole mansion.
- Only then open the matching guide section.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Where is the servant bedroom key?
Search mansion bedrooms, servant spaces, and drawers thoroughly. It is an in-world pickup, not a promo reward.
Do I need a screwdriver for vents?
Yes. Vents are tool-gated. Keep the screwdriver assigned to one player in co-op until the path is done.
Can codes spawn items?
No. Before Truth has no redeem UI. Papers and tools are found in the investigation.
Should I drop tools after using them?
Not until the related gate is finished. This is not a looter inventory.
