Before Truth Co-op Tips & Roles
Investigate together without blocking every keypad.
Before Truth supports online co-op, including four-player Chapter 2 instances. That fact matters: do not describe the game as single-player only or local-only. Solo is atmospheric; co-op is often the cleaner way to handle randomized pads and stalker pressure while you investigate the missing mother and daughter case.

Pre-lobby checklist
- Confirm chapter: 1 mansion route or 2 deeper mystery (Chapter timeline).
- Everyone understands no promo redeem codes (Promo codes).
- Share the kitchen map link: Kitchen=1, Living Room=2, Washroom=3 (Kitchen code).
- Decide voice vs text callouts.
- Agree who reads spoilers if someone opens a walkthrough mid-run.
Core roles (2–3 players)
Scout — opens drawers, finds papers, calls room names.
Operator — stands at keypads/doors, types digits, avoids panic re-entry.
Lookout — watches halls for the stalker creature, calls retreats.
Four-player Chapter 2 adjustments
Add a Floater who assists blocked prompts and ferries information between distant rooms. Rules for fours:
- Max two people at a keypad UI.
- One designated scribe posts the paper order in chat.
- No stacking flashlights in one doorway—save a beam for the rear.
- If interactions fail, step back; body blocking is the usual culprit (Controls).
Callout language that works
Say “kitchen living kitchen living” or “one two one two,” not “uh the usual code.” Randomized sessions make “the usual” false. If the bathroom second drawer paper changes after a rejoin, resend the order immediately.
Puzzle co-op workflow
- Scout secures the clue.
- Scribe converts with the digit map.
- Operator enters once.
- Lookout covers.
- On failure, re-read—do not randomize digits.

Fear management as a team
Jump scares cascade in voice chat. Assign a calm player to mute panic long enough to finish a pad. After wipes, regroup at a landmark before splitting again. Chapter 2’s asylum-leaning halls punish hero sprints (Chapter 2 walkthrough).
Story co-op
Rotate who reads notes aloud so David Johnson breadcrumbs and victim details reach everyone. A silent lobby misses half the detective fantasy before Ending explained.
What not to do in co-op
- Paste executor scripts “for the group” (Script safety.
- Share kitchen digits from a different server.
- Gatekeep clues.
- Spoiler the entire ending five minutes into Chapter 1.
- Leave the Operator alone without a Lookout during known chase spawns.
Recommended co-op routes
Learning lobby: Chapter 1 with kitchen method on second monitor (Chapter 1 walkthrough).
Standard clear: Chapter 1 then 2 same night with stable roles.
Challenge lobby: blind Chapter 2 after everyone already knows Chapter 1 literacy (Chapter difficulty).

Hosting etiquette
Whoever hosts should wait for the full lobby before starting irreversible transitions, announce chapter choice in chat, and paste the kitchen helper link for newcomers. If a friend joins mid-chapter, brief them on the current objective instead of yelling only “go go go.”
After-action review (five minutes)
Ask: Which clue did we miss longest? Who got blocked on a prompt? Did anyone try a promo-code myth? Fix those before the next session and Chapter 2 will feel a tier easier.
Good co-op turns Before Truth into a shared detective story instead of four people fighting over one drawer. Assign roles, speak digits clearly, and keep the flashlight honest.
Mic-optional lobbies
Text-only groups can still clear Chapters 1–2. Bind a short digit macro in your head, paste orders into chat, and keep movement deliberate so the Operator is never guessing. Mic helps fear calls, but the kitchen paper method does not require voice.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Does Before Truth have online co-op?
Yes. Online co-op is available, including four-player Chapter 2 instances.
What is the best co-op size?
Two or three keeps prompts clean; four works with strict roles and less crowding on keypads.
How do we share the kitchen code?
Read the bathroom paper in your instance and call the converted digits. Do not reuse another server’s code.
Can one player stay AFK?
AFK bodies still block interactions. Prefer active lookouts or smaller lobbies.
Should we use scripts together?
No. They risk accounts and break the investigation fantasy—see Script safety.
