How to Survive in Before Truth

Stalker rules, flashlight discipline, and panic recovery.

How to Survive the Creature

The most common wipe in Before Truth is not a failed kitchen pad—it is looking at the tall stalker creature when you should look away. Johnpcps / Eagle Studios built Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 around investigation first, but the monster enforces patience. This page is the survival layer that sits under every walkthrough.

You are still a detective on a missing mother-and-daughter case. David Johnson’s trap only works if panic makes you drop evidence. Survive so you can keep reading drawers.

The look-away rule

Players in live sessions repeat the same warning: do not stare at the creature’s eyes. If you lock camera on it, it can close distance fast. Break line of sight—corner, furniture, doorway—then wait. Looking “a little bit” still counts as looking. Treat the rule like a keypad: binary, not a vibe.

Headphones help. Audio spikes often arrive before the model does. If a teammate yells “eyes,” everyone looks at the floor or a wall, not the hallway.

Flashlight as a tool, not a spotlight

The flashlight exists to read papers, vents, and second drawers—not to hunt the monster. Point it at clue surfaces. Sweeping the creature like a horror movie torch is how people trigger chases. When the room goes loud, lower the beam, move to cover, then resume investigation.

Battery and light discipline also appear in item routes. If a battery puzzle exists in your session, solve it after the room is quiet. Details live on Items and Controls.

Corners, beds, and dead ends

Corner camping works for a few seconds while a chase passes. It is not a win condition. Beds and decorative piles can hide you visually; they can also trap you if the creature pathing hugs the same furniture. Prefer corners with two exits. If a teddy, vent cover, or prop falls, do not spin the camera to “check”—that spin is how people meet the eyes.

Co-op survival jobs

Online co-op, including larger Chapter 2 instances, makes survival a role:

  • Lookout watches audio and calls “look away.”
  • Scout keeps moving to unread drawers.
  • Operator stays on keypads so the team is not all clustered in one sightline.

Do not stack four detectives in the same doorway. Split, call, regroup. Full roles: Co-op tips.

Survive the kitchen, then the rest

The kitchen pad still uses Kitchen=1, Living Room=2, Washroom=3 from the bathroom second-drawer paper. Survival fails when one player holds the paper in a chase while nobody is at the pad. Call the order in chat, then move. Method: Kitchen code. Broader pads: Puzzle codes.

There are still no promo redeem codes that skip the monster. Fake “god mode codes” lists are wrong—Promo codes.

After a scare, resume evidence

A jump scare is not a checkpoint. When the screen settles, return to the last unfinished note, vent, or key. Chapter 1 needs screwdriver, keys, and computer letters as much as it needs courage. Pair this page with Chapter 1 walkthrough and Mansion map.

Chapter 2 keeps the same look-away language in denser, asylum-leaning halls. Do not unlearn Chapter 1 habits. Route: Chapter 2 walkthrough.

What not to do

  1. Sprint every hallway “to get it over with.”
  2. Paste a friend’s kitchen digits during a chase.
  3. Open executors because you died once—read Script safety instead.
  4. Assume the game is single-player only; online co-op is supported.
  5. Treat David Johnson as a friendly quest giver. Cast: Characters.

How to use the video

The mid-article video is a real Chapter 1 session with creature pressure, keypad callouts, and look-away panic. Use it for timing, not for copying a four-digit code on screen. Pause when your lobby’s paper differs.

Recovery checklist

Look away · break line of sight · flashlight on clues not eyes · call the kitchen order · split roles · reopen the last drawer · continue the case.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Does looking at the creature make it chase you?

Yes. Players consistently report that staring at the stalker—especially the eyes—triggers aggressive pursuit. Break line of sight.

Should I shine the flashlight at the monster?

No. Use the light to read clues. Pointing it at the creature is a common way to start a chase.

Can co-op make survival easier?

Yes. Online co-op lets one player watch while others operate keypads. Solo is optional, not required.

Do promo codes remove the creature?

No. Before Truth has no redeem UI and no working promo codes.
